See, from how you described it, I wouldn't normally consider that episode a filler, because in my perspective we get to see a bunch of main characters/secondary characters deal with an otherwise untouched subject. My favorite episode of Ergo Proxy (yes, I know it isn't a long running shonen) is when they're stranded and dying of boredom, and it's one of the infamous filler episodes, but the way it explores the idea of boredom is very intelligent. I don't mind filler if the episode is still used for something relevant to the core themes of the show, if it has any. I have friends who are Bleach and Naruto fans who have shown me several of what are apparently the best fights and I didn't enjoy them at all, they lasted more than an episode, were bogged down with lengthy dialogue, and werely poorly directed with no choreography. I also won't mind them if the fights and comedy are entertaining enough, but I don't like long running shows for most part due to the pacing, and the tendency for obnoxious MCs.

The filler is really annoying here, I watch DBZ for the ridiculous fights and all the funny/stupid moments, but the filler episodes are just slow and boring, lacking the qualities I like about the rest of the series.

The fights were not engaging in the episodes I watched, and the pacing in Naruto was so bad I had to force myself to even finish the arc with Haku.ĭBZ is fun if I skip about 70% of it, and tolerable even if I don't. I dislike the annoying, stubborn, doesn't afraid of anything archetype in general. The combination of a variety of action, creativity, many likeable characters, and focus on the plot is what makes it appealing to me. It still suffers from some of the issues I have with these types of shows in general, such as excessive recaps and long winded internal monologues, but it's a bit lighter on both. 40 episodes in and there isn't any filler so far, Gon is always focused on getting stronger (the trademark motivation of long running shonen), or finding his dad. One of my favorite 'action' scenes is Gon trying to steal a ball from Netero. It has action, but it's not always fighting. It's very creative with it's settings, challenges, and character designs. The only long running show I like is HunterxHunter.
#Yu yu hakusho anime fillers series
Hopefully I might find a new perspective to consider when watching the next long running series I run into.

Break it down nice and simple for me, and tell me why YOU enjoy/don't enjoy filler in these types of shows, or why you enjoy/don't enjoy these types of shows at all. And apparently that is not a feeling that most people get from these types of episodes. Maybe it's because I've always enjoyed character progression more than explosive combat scenes, but watching a bunch of over-powered super-heroes argue about who finds coffee less gross tasting was, for me, the little push I needed to get over the next 'main' arc. I've found myself enjoying episodes that revolve around unimportant characters enjoying their daily, normal lives/living world lives more than I've been enjoying the long, monotonous, plot-armor laden main arcs. The idea of watching characters who have something better to do/ignoring the plot for shenanigans has always left a bad taste in my mouth Why not just go watch a slice of life/other anime with less emphasis on plot instead?īut I've been trying to finish Bleach this year, now that the series has been wrapped up for a while, and I find myself looking more and more often to when the next filler episode is while watching. I've always been one to enjoy 24 boring-ish slice of life episodes over the idea of sitting through 12 episodes or an arc of 'filler'. So, I've never been too partial to the big 3 of anime, or any other long running (100+) episode shows because of the inherent negativity that comes attached to a lot of the filler episodes and arcs for these types of shows.
