Had cocktails at Buddha Bar for cocktails, which are excellent, in the hope of a cheeky walk-in however even though the restaurant was less than half full during our entire time they insisted they were fully booked. The restaurant share with Sugar Beach simply doesn’t work, turns out that La Pirogue is allocated a single table at each of Sugar’s restaurants per night and we were unable to book either during our week long stay. Octopus carpaccio was both beautifully presented and tasted wonderful. Very good food at Magenta, with restaurant style service. Service at the coconut cafe and beach bar is somewhat sporadic, whether this is simply due to novice staff or lack of training is unclear. They also do a marvellous vodka, lime and soda.īreakfast is much as expected at large international hotels, although a shout out for the croissants which are delicious. After a slow start with service the bar really stepped up and took great care of us. Live entertainment at main bar each evening which varies but overall an additive to the overall experience.
Rooms are small but well suited for couples, all on ground floor with a veranda. We look forward to returning before too long for another relaxing and enjoyable holiday. So, a great place to stay with a sophisticated and multinational clientele, wonderful staff and excellent facilities. We bought lunch every day, had lots of drinks and paid supplements for our non-buffet evening meals - our final bill was about 60% of the additional tariff for AI. Moreover, quite a few food and drink items attract an additional charge on top of the AI tariff. The additional cost for “all-inclusive” is substantial and I think you would have to consume a considerable volume to justify it. It’s probably important to chose the correct tariff if you are planning a holiday here, we took half board which worked well. It seems underused and may not be very popular. The Van der Stel wine bar we didn’t use, but did explore. The themed buffets in Woolmar restaurant were great. The Coconut Cafe for lunches and dinner was very good. All were good Magenta was excellent but Citronella was probably a little less good than we expected. We used most of the facilities and ate in each of the restaurants, including dinner in Citronellas at Sugar Beach. Large holiday hotels with rooms in blocks, with corridors, often on many levels, and on a cramped “footprint” do not appeal so that’s why we came back to La Pirogue on our return visit to Mauritius. We chose this hotel 20+ yrs ago because of the layout, with beautiful gardens, individual cottages and a long beachfront. The setting, facilities, accommodation, catering and entertainment are terrific but the attentive, helpful and endlessly cheerful staff are what really makes this place special. However, what hasn’t changed are the very high standards at La Pirogue.
We had visited previously, in 20, and there have been many impressive improvements since that time. My wife and stayed here for 8 nights in November and had a wonderful time.
